1 〔歌舞伎の芝居〕 a Kabuki play [drama, performance, piece].

2 〔能狂言〕 a Noh farce; a comic interlude (performed as supplementary entertainment during a Noh program).
3 〔作りごと〕 a trick; a sham; a fake; a make-believe; a put-up job. [⇒しばい2]
間(あい)狂言 an interlude [entr'acte] of kyōgen comedy (performed) during a Noh play.
当たり狂言 a successful play; a hit.
替わり狂言 a substitute [replacement] play [piece].
切り狂言 a curtain closer; the final play [last piece] in a Kabuki program.
前[幕開き]狂言 a curtain-raiser; the first play in a Kabuki program.
